Tina Sloan

Actress and Author of Changing Shoes: Getting Older—Not Old—with Style, Humor, and Grace

For twenty-six years, Tina Sloan played the role of nurse Lillian Raines on Guiding Light, which aired its final episode in 2009 after a seventy-two-year run on radio and television. In addition to this long-term role, she also appeared in numerous television shows, such as Somerset, Search For Tomorrow and Another World, and films including Woody Allen’s Celebrity and The Curse of the Jade Scorpion, The Brave One with Jodi Foster, Changing Lanes with Ben Affleck, The Guru with Marisa Tomei, and People I Know with Al Pacino.

Despite her impressive career, at 48, Tina felt like she was invisible. Her life was changing, and it seemed to be changing for the worse. Her parents’ health was in decline, her son was a marine being deployed to Iraq, and she was getting older. Once the star of Guiding Light, Tina had now moved on to the role of mother of the star, and finally to grandmother of the star. Gone were the sexy, strappy, silver high heels she was used to. Tina’s new go-to shoes were a pair of scuffed and broken-in black flats with Dr. Scholl’s insoles. Instead of despairing, she decided to stick it out and reinvent herself in order to keep the career she loved.

This transformation is documented in Tina’s charmingly written and humorously honest memoir, Changing Shoes. In a warmly relatable way, Tina tackles the issues all women face—eventually—including weight gain, caring for aging parents, children leaving home, evolving romantic relationships, and adjusting to aging looks and a dwindling career. She not only shares hilarious stories, she also provides practical advice learned in the trenches of the hair and makeup rooms of Guiding Light, movie sets, and on the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Tina’s career remains strong with three film roles in 2010 and an acclaimed one-woman show, Changing Shoes, which sold out in New York City and is now touring nationally.
