about the author

Susan McCorkindale

Author of 500 Acres and No Place to Hide and Confessions of a Counterfeit Farm Girl

Susan McCorkindale was born and raised in New Jersey. She loves Bruce Springsteen, the New York Giants, and the Jersey shore. A graduate of Marymount Manhattan College, Susan spent five long, hard minutes pursuing an acting career before making a detour into marketing. She has held top spots at Family Circle and Popular Science magazines, and today writes advertising copy on a freelance basis from the comfort of her farmhouse in Virginia.

The mother of two sons, new widow, and fledgling farm manager, Susan spends her free time chauffeuring her children all over God's green earth, pulling deer ticks off the dogs, and occasionally putting two words together.

500 Acres and No Place to Hide

"Self-deprecating and funny. This second memoir is grounded by the author's husband's diagnosis of terminal cancer. Unexpectedly, the book's mood does not darken after this revelation. Instead, in the same very personal, very honest voice that characterizes her lighter passages, she shares how the ridiculous, the annoying, and the sublime are interwoven against the stark reality of his illness. It is this honesty and her bravery in the face of paralyzing fear that readers will admire."

  • "Susan spoke to my organization when her first book, Confessions of a Counterfeit Farm Girl, came out. She is a captivating speaker with charm and a dry wit, and the rave notices about her speech got the members of Fauquier Women, Inc. and my personal book club, to attend her 500 Acres and No Place to Hide book signing in a hundred degree heat!" - Linda L. Dick, President, Fauquier Women, Inc.

  • "I was deeply affected. She spoke truly from her heart. She shared the incredibly moving story of her family’s journey. She connected with me, when she spoke of the pain of losing her husband, and the father of her children, to cancer. She spoke of the days leading up to, and the days immediately following his passing. What I saw and heard was a mother who loves her sons deeply, and cherishes the memory and legacy of her husband. She spoke of the blessings of friendship and community, and the lessons she has learned from her sons. She spoke of the things that truly make a life count (with a great deal of humor by the way). It has given me pause many times since then." - Rob Talton, Lord Fairfax Community College Foundation

  • "Listening to Susan speak to a group feels exactly the same as it does to listen to her one-on-one. From the first word, I feel drawn in to the dialogue and find myself intently listening for the next part of the message. A gifted storyteller, her style leads me to continue hoping that there will be at least one more story to share before she stops. Susan is a natural-born comedian and uses her humor as a strength to help present important information. After hearing her speak about the trials she has faced and the path she took to rally her family to navigate those waters, I left inspired to implement positive change in my own life. I look forward to the opportunity to hear Susan again." - David Urso, Executive Director, LFCC Educational Foundation, Inc.
