Speaking Topics — Kim Edwards

  • Invention and Intention: The Intuitive and the Analytical in the Art of Writing
In this talk, Kim will explore perspectives on the creative process, looking at the ways in which a wide and disparate array of writers have understood the genesis and growth of their work. In particular Kim will discuss examples from her own writing, both her stories and her novel; she will focus on the interplay between the intuitive discovering of a book (invention) and the analytical shaping of it (intention). In this talk, Kim will refer to several of her stories, as well as to The Memory Keeper’s Daughter.
  • When Art Meets Life
Several of Kim’s stories, as well as her novel, grew from the ways in which particular characters intersected with the social and political realities of their times. In this talk, Kim will consider the ways in which contemporary or historical events can inspire fictional accounts, the challenges involved in researching and writing such stories, and the successful weave of fact and fiction. Specifically Kim will look at “A Gleaming in the Darkness,” “The Story of My Life,” and The Memory Keeper’s Daughter, reading from those works and discussing how they came to be.
