Motivation and Inspiration
Since David’s philanthropic organization, Big Sunday’s, central philosophy is that everyone has a way they can help somebody else, David has a great deal of experience motivating and inspiring people (and, um, coercing them to volunteer or give). David’s personal area of expertise is “the reluctant volunteer,” as he was one himself. His belief, which he writes about in his book, is “If I can do this, anyone can.” Not only does he motivate people, but he also gives advice to people on how they can motivate others. David is very clear that Big Sunday was born not out of altruism, but rather out of frustration and depression—he says in his book that he had a choice between becoming “an alcoholic or a humanitarian. I’m a lousy drinker, so I became a humanitarian.”
Religion and Spirituality
Big Sunday started at a house of worship, as a synagogue Mitzvah Day, and so the story of Big Sunday particularly resonates with Jewish groups. David, however, speaks effectively to people of every religious tradition. Diverse audiences are moved to hear how he, who is not particularly observant, found meaningful work and spiritual expression through community service rather than devotional practice. He connects faith to action and explains the importance of interfaith work.
Younger Audiences
David has spoken to large and small audiences and assemblies at education institutions ranging from elementary schools to graduate programs. He believes that no one is ever too young to make a difference. He is happy to help kids and teens find their way to doing meaningful community service, on their own or with friends, families, school groups, faith groups, teams, scout troops, or any other association to which they belong.
Other Groups
In addition to believing that people are never too young to help, David also believes that they’re never too old to contribute. He thinks helping others is empowering and has both inspiration and practical advice for every stage of life; as a result, his message often resonates strongly with older audiences. His speeches have also been popular with those making a mid-career or mid-life transition. Big Sunday has been a second—and unexpected—career for David, and people often enjoy hearing that story.
Diversity
Big Sunday is extremely inclusive. Moreover, the group’s mission moves beyond community service to community service as a means to community building. David is proudest that his work brings people together despite very different backgrounds. In a world where race, religion, gender, age, neighborhood, and class are among the forces working to divide us, Big Sunday builds upon what unites us. As someone who made his own journey outside a once sheltered and limited circle, David enjoys speaking about the adventure of diversity—and how its vital lessons are ones everyone can learn.
Finding Humor in Helping
David’s speeches are funny, and his take on the helping-and-giving community is never solemn or precious but often delightfully irreverent and spirit-lifting.
Testimonials
-
“I want to thank David for speaking at the Religious Diversity Forum last Saturday. I don’t have to tell you how well received he was and how entertaining, heart tugging, and inspirational his words were. Every evaluation came back with nothing but rave reviews…The audience was filled with community leaders, professors, clergy, active community citizens, and even the Vice President and Liaison (and former Ambassador to France and India) to the United Nations. His message reminded everyone that it’s our earthly goodness and the “just do it” mentality that moves mountains.” - Sande Hart, SARAH, Spiritual and Religious Alliance for Hope, Orange County, California
-
“Everyone really appreciated David being our graduation speaker, but more than that, everyone loved his speech. More than one faculty member told me it was the best graduation speech they had ever heard, and we go to a lot of these! We know our students so well that it means a lot to us to have them be the center of a graduation speech. David made them the center, but also inspired them and all of us. Plus, he was funny! Thank you again for making our graduation perfect.” - Janet Arribas, Pilgrim School, Los Angeles
-
“It was an honor to have David join us and speak to our audience. Everyone I spoke with thoroughly enjoyed listening to him, and we really appreciate that he could make it to our dinner and accept our award. We had our largest turnout ever, and the evening was a great success.” - Brandi Church, Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Los Angeles
