Ann B. Ross
Author of the Miss Julia Novels
Ann B. Ross is the author of two original paperback mysteries, The Murder Cure (Avon, 1978) and The Murder Stroke (Norton, 1981), and a hardcover historical novel, The Pilgrimage (Macmillan, 1987). During the silent years, she raised three children to productive adulthood, welcomed six unparalleled grandchildren, earned a bachelor degree in Literature, a master’s degree, and a doctor of philosophy degree in English, the last two at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her major field of study in graduate school was Medieval English Literature and Language, with a specialty in Anglo-Saxon studies. Her dissertation is titled “The Anglo-Saxon Concept of the Soul”, using 8th, 9th, and 10th-century homilies in Old English and Latin. She was on the faculty of UNC-Asheville as Visiting Lecturer in Literature, Adjunct Professor of Humanities, and Visiting Professor of Literature and Humanities until she began writing full time.
Since the first Miss Julia book was published in 1999, writing the subsequent books and touring for speaking and signing events have taken up most of Ross’s time. She lives in a small town in Western North Carolina, which has absolutely no relation to Abbotsville.
All the Miss Julia books are being published in German, Japanese, Turkish, and Croatian in their entirety, while the first book was published by the Reader’s Digest Condensed Books in twelve languages. Miss Julia Speaks Her Mind was named a Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers book in 1999. It was also #9 on the 76 Most Highly Recommended Books by BookSense, and was listed as one of the Best Books of the First Five Years by BookSense. It has been optioned by three film production companies at various times, but none so far have been able to replicate Miss Julia. Six of the Miss Julia books have appeared on the New York Times Extended Bestseller List. Many have also appeared on the bestseller lists of BookSense and Barnes & Noble.
Miss Julia Rocks the Cradle (April 2011) is the twelfth book in the series.
