A contributing editor and correspondent for The Atlantic Monthly, Ellen Ruppel Shell has covered the intersection of science, technology, culture, and commerce for print, online, and broadcast here and abroad, for publications including The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Boston Globe, The Guardian (UK), Smithsonian magazine, Discover, Technology Review, Seed, Audubon, and the television network PBS. In addition to Cheap, Shell is author of The Hungry Gene: The Science of Fat and the Future of Thin (Grove, 2002) and A Child’s Place (Little, Brown, 1992.) An award-winning author and National Magazine Award finalist, she has served as a visiting fellow in occupational health at the Harvard School of Public Health and as a Vannevar Bush Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
